Discover the history of Auschwitz with our licensed guide leading the way
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest Nazi concentration camp. Located in German-occupied southern Poland, it was named after the nearby town of Oświęcim, about 25 kilometers from Katowice. The complex included three main camps: Auschwitz I Camp – the administrative center, Auschwitz II (Birkenau Camp) – an extermination camp where mass killing in gas chambers occurred, and Auschwitz III (Monowitz) – a forced labor camp.
Established in 1940, Auschwitz was built and expanded using forced labor from prisoners, with materials taken from persecuted groups, primarily Jews. Over time, it expanded with support from the Nazi regime and German industries, which used prisoners for forced labor. Auschwitz became a powerful symbol of the Holocaust’s atrocities, where more than a million people, mostly Jews, were executed.
