FIVE YEARS OF HORROR
The first prisoners arrived at Auschwitz on May 20, 1940, and the camp was in operation for five years.
OVERCROWDED BLOCKS
The Auschwitz camp had 28 blocks, most of which were residential buildings for prisoners. The blocks were built to hold around 700 prisoners, but the number of prisoners in each block was around 1,200.
THREE DAILY MEALS
The prisoners had three meals during the day:
- In the morning they had half a liter of a tea or coffee substitute.
- For lunch, they had 1 liter of soup (made of potatoes, rutabagas (swedes), millet, rye flour, and “Avo” food extract).
- For dinner, they had 300 grams of black bread, with 25 grams of sausage, margarine, marmalade, or cheese.
196 PRISONERS SUCCESSFULLY ESCAPED FROM THE CAMP
Most of the 196 prisoners even lived to see the end of the war. 25 prisoners managed to escape but were captured again. Also, around 7,000 prisoners were liberated from the camp by the Soviet Red Army on January 27th, 1945.
