Highly recommended Auschwitz and Salt Mine tour!

A tour of Auschwitz was on my bucket list for a very long time. I was afraid of seeing this place, but I'm glad I did. It is dreary and bleak, but important because it serves as a stark reminder to all of us. It was good that this day trip didn't end with Auschwitz, as we next went to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. This fascinating underground structure is full of the most incredible sights, such as sculptures and numerous chambers completely carved out of salt rocks. I can say that I learned a lot on this day trip, and I highly recommend everyone to take it!

Amazing guide and great organization

Such an interesting day trip to Auschwitz Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and told us many gruesome stories about Auschwitz and life of the victims. It was traumatizing to see gas chambers, I even cried, but our guide managed to calm me. On the other hand, Wieliczka Salt Mine kept me fascinated on a whole different level. I was especially amazed by the St. Kinga's Chapel, but also the underground salt lakes. Couldn't have asked for a better tour or a more amazing guide!

DESCRIPTION

Auschwitz Wieliczka Salt Mine Tour

TOUR OF AUSCHWITZ I

After a 90-minute drive in a comfortable, air-conditioned bus, you will arrive at the first part of the Auschwitz and Salt Mine Tour. Follow your tour guide around this infamous site, which was used as a prison camp during World War II. Auschwitz I was established by the Nazis after the invasion of Poland and operated from 1940 to 1945. Thousands of Polish resistance fighters, Soviet prisoners of war, and later Jews received inhuman treatment within its grim walls. Learn about the tragic fate of these people, who were used as forced laborers and test subjects for horrific experiments performed by Nazi scientists. On this part of the group tour, you will visit the Auschwitz Birkenau Museum, where you will see photographs, and personal items of the victims. Some of these blocks have truly disturbing histories, and you will learn more about them from your knowledgeable guide.

AUSCHWITZ BIRKENAU MEMORIAL

On the second part of your English-guided tour to Auschwitz, you will visit Auschwitz Birkenau, an area that was ten times bigger than Auschwitz I. It was primarily used for mass executions of Jews and is the symbol of the Holocaust, or "Shoah" in Hebrew. An estimated 1.1 million Jews were systematically exterminated here in what was called "Endlösung der Judenfrage" (The Final Solution to the Jewish question) by the officials of the Third Reich. You will see the grim-looking Gate House, the last stop for the train wagons that brought Jewish civilians from all corners of occupied Europe. From here, almost all of them were led straight to the gas chambers, where they were poisoned to death by the Zyklon B gas. With this tour, your Auschwitz ticket also includes entry to Birkenau, allowing you to explore both parts of the memorial site with a licensed guide. Unlike regular visitors, participants of group tours are permitted to climb to the top floor of the Gate House and see the grounds of the Auschwitz Birkenau.

WIELICZKA SALT MINE GUIDED TOUR

On the last part of this day trip, you will visit Wieliczka Salt Mine for a guided tour. Before descending into the mine shafts, you will have an hour of free time for a lunch break. As you follow your tour guide through the corridors of this unique place, you will notice that everything in here is carved out of salt. This includes many chambers, such as Pieskowa Skała Chamber, Michałowice Chamber, and Stanisław Staszic Chamber, but also places of worship like the St. Kinga’s Chapel or the St. Anthony’s Chapel. Learn about people who built all this, their motives, and the daily lives they spent working deep underground.

Look straight ahead on the Wieliczka Salt Mine stairs

The tour begins with a very long walk down a wooden staircase. You have to go down about 400 steps in a tight circle. Many people feel dizzy looking down the center gap. Keep your eyes on the person in front of you instead of staring into the empty space. This simple trick stops you from feeling sick before the tour even starts.

Were Jewish prisoners taken from Auschwitz Birkenau to work in the Wieliczka Salt Mine?

There were a number of Jewish prisoners from Auschwitz and other camps who were transported to this salt mine. In later stages of World War II, when the Soviet army began its push to Berlin, the Nazis intended to convert the Wieliczka Salt Mine into an underground weapons factory. It was futile as the Red Army progressed too rapidly, but nevertheless many Jews paid this attempt with their lives.

This use of forced labor in industrial settings echoes similar efforts elsewhere, such as in Oskar Schindler’s factory in Kraków, where Jewish workers were employed under harsh wartime conditions. Unlike in Wieliczka, Schindler tried to protect his workers and save them from deportation. To better understand this part of history and the role of Jewish labor in wartime Kraków, we highly recommend the Schindler’s Factory Tour when you're back in the city.

Book the Auschwitz and Salt Mine Tour to learn more about the connection between these three sites.

Did you know you can actually taste the walls inside the mine?

The guides will tell your group to lick the rock to prove everything is made of real salt. It sounds completely crazy, but visitors do this every single day. You should definitely try it, but please be smart about where you put your tongue. Thousands of tourists touch the main paths and the areas near the stairs. Nobody wants to taste a wall covered in dirty handprints. So, find a clear salt surface and simply scratch a tiny piece off with your nail.
