Learning about its construction from army barracks and its first Polish prisoners was a good introduction to the actual guided tour. Do you know what Auschwitz prisoners' living conditions were like?
There was almost no privacy. The Auschwitz residential barracks were originally intended for about 700 prisoners but at times held 1,200 inmates. In Auschwitz II Birkenau, there were brick and wooden barracks, but both lacked basic sanitary facilities, lights, heating, and water. In addition, there was frequently high humidity in the barracks, attracting lice and mice.
