While not easy, I believe everyone should visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. To see the barracks, the prisoners’ personal items, and the gas chambers…truly a sobering experience. It would not have been the same without our guide Anna though. She was very professional and knowledgeable - even on subjects such as the camp officials’ later trials. 5 stars for her.

WALK AROUND AUSCHWITZ I - THE MAIN CAMP
Your guided tour begins with the Auschwitz I camp. Auschwitz had several sub-sections, and Auschwitz I was the "Stammlager" - the main camp and administrative center. Pass under the infamous "Arbeit macht frei" sign built by prisoners, and see residential barracks, prisoners’ personal items, watchtowers, and Crematorium I. As you explore, your guide will teach you the site’s history, starting from the first mass victim transport: 728 Polish male political prisoners on 14 June 1940.
STOP FOR LUNCH AND TRAVEL TO AUSCHWITZ II-BIRKENAU
After seeing the Auschwitz I camp, there’ll be a 10-15 minute break during which you can eat your lunch. You can either bring your own food and drink with you, or have a quick bite at the cafeteria at Auschwitz I. Then, board the museum bus shuttle to Auschwitz II-Birkenau - it’s free of charge!

Continue on to Auschwitz II-Birkenau, location of crematoria II-V and the main extermination camp. Here you’ll see the inmates’ barracks, where each prisoner was afforded a measly 1 m2 (11 sq ft) to sleep and keep their belongings. In such squalid conditions, Auschwitz II-Birkenau could hold 125,000 victims. Your guide will also show you the gas chambers in crematoria II-V, where, on average, a horrific 1,000 prisoners perished daily.

Facts about Auschwitz you probably didn't know
- The ‘B’ in the "Arbeit macht frei" sign is upside-down intentionally - the prisoners made it that way as an act of defiance.
- On October 7, 1944, an uprising broke out. Inmates killed some SS members, and escaped to a granary near Rajsko, but, were unfortunately caught and subdued.
- 802 prisoners tried to escape Auschwitz, but only 144 succeeded.
- The camp orchestra was forced to play cheerful music as prisoners marched to their deaths.
- Some prisoners risked their lives to keep secret diaries, many of which were buried near the camp and discovered decades later.
